About the Project

The Midvalley Express is a seven-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project connecting the West Valley Central Station to the Murray Central Station, with connections to FrontRunner and Trax routes, in Salt Lake County, Utah. The new route is UTA’s third BRT route, following the recent success of the Odgen Express. Preconstruction efforts have substantial completion on track months ahead of schedule, despite delays in funding from the FTA.

Need

This new BRT system will further connect the cities of Murray, Taylorsville, and West Valley City, UT, and provide a needed stop at the growing Salt Lake Community College. With rising populations and new communities being built in the area, the 15-minute interval route will provide a needed alternative mode of transportation to the congested area. By improving transit accessibility, frequency, and visibility, UTA will help enhance local economy by connecting riders to regional destinations and planned developments.

Work

  • Transit center on five-acre land parcel at Salt Lake Community College.
  • 1.4 miles of exclusive bus lanes.
  • 15 new station locations, with 25 individual stations.
  • Three center stations.
  • Utilities, communications, retaining and privacy walls.
  • Extension of North Jordan Canal culvert.
  • Parking lots.

Coordination

The route interfaces with a college, state transportation agency, three cities, three water departments and two power departments, requiring close coordination and collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure directives are met. A nearby canal provides water to Kennecott, one of the largest mines in the world. There was only a two-week window to perform the culvert extension to this canal, which was successfully completed in April 2025.
