About the Project

The redevelopment and expansion of the existing five-acre Parklane Park by 20 acres, delivered a transformative 25-acre community destination. The project introduced diverse recreational amenities and new park facilities. Significant public right-of-way improvements enhanced accessibility and created a vibrant space for residents of all ages and abilities.

Need

The existing Parklane Park lacked the capacity, variety, and accessibility to meet the growing recreational demands of the surrounding community. The expansion addressed that gap by reimagining the site as a comprehensive, multi-use park that delivers active programming, passive open space, and community-gathering infrastructure all in one connected destination.

Work

  • Constructed an accessible play area
  • Built basketball and tennis courts
  • Installed two Portland Loo restrooms
  • Established two natural turf soccer fields
  • Developed a parking lot
  • Installed expansive paved pathways and lighting
  • Fabricated and erected a large custom fabricated pavilion shelter
  • Created an enclosed dog park
  • Developed a community garden
  • Built a playground and splash pad
  • Constructed a skatepark
  • Seeded native open spaces and expansive lawn

Impact

The expanded park gives the surrounding community a gathering place built for everyone, drawing neighbors together through shared recreation, green space, and public amenities that will serve as a strengthening connection for generations to come.

Innovations

  • Leveraged the discovery of numerous massive boulders approximately 30 feet below grade to enhance the park design, incorporating them as natural landscape elements that added historical character and reduced material waste.
  • Restored and rebalanced a parcel that had settled significantly since its original construction in the 1990s, causing seasonal inundation for up to three months each year.
  • Implemented erosion control measures, constructed a haul road, completed strategic tree removal, and regraded the site to improve drainage, reduce flooding impacts, and enhance long-term site resilience.
  • Adapted the landscape design to account for poor drainage and seasonal flooding by identifying and specifying tree species capable of tolerating extended periods of saturated soil.
