About the Project

This new station was built on the existing SMART Commuter Rail line to provide residents of Petaluma another way to access the popular alignment. Six miles of pedestrian pathway adjacent to the track were included in the scope.

Need

This new station enhances connectivity into the heart of Petaluma, providing residents and visitors in the popular wine region with easier access to convenient transportation. It also provides nearby residents with a public transit station connecting them to San Francisco.

Work

  • Replacement of 650 track feet (tf).
  • Replacement of a 420 tf grade crossing.
  • Six miles of non-motorized pathway.
  • Two pedestrian bridges.
  • New station platform.
  • Drainage upgrades.
  • Traffic signal upgrades.

Collaboration

Although this contract was bid-build, the team was heavily involved in identifying quality issues prior to construction, saving the project time and money.

During a field survey, the team identified that the platform edge and top of rail design were mis-aligned and would not produce the ¼-in tolerance required. The scope was subsequently re-designed, saving an estimated $2M.

The team also identified an issue with the initial pathway design that would have required walls and fill to maintain the required pathway distances from the track. As a result, the pathway’s profile was raised in order to not impact the existing utilities walkway along the track.
