The Sixth Street Viaduct is a signature bridge and community landmark, combining architectural presence, pedestrian connectivity, and public space into one of Los Angeles’ most iconic civic structures.
Work
This CM/GC project involved the demolition and reconstruction of the iconic Sixth Street Viaduct, located just east of downtown Los Angeles. The replacement bridge features 11 concrete arch spans connecting the Arts District to Boyle Heights, designed to serve as a new civic icon for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The bridge crosses over Highway 101, the Los Angeles River, and two major railroad corridors for a total of 18 tracks. The new concrete arches rise 80 feet above the superstructure and feature pedestrian access both along the arches and down to a new public plaza below.
In addition to the bridge, the project includes a new gateway portal to the Los Angeles River, as well as a tunnel that extends beneath nine active railroad lines, a multi-use walkway, and the creation of a 12-acre community park. Associated improvements include utility relocations and intersection reconstruction.
